What's that smell?What's that smell?
Deck the Halls

17 August 2006

It’s about this time of year I head on over to Hallmark and check out the Keepsake Christmas Ornaments. It’s bitter sweet checking out what’s just released and what soon will be. I say that because the only store licenced to sell them in Australia is Target. Target of course think they know what we Aussies want, so that’s why every year they only stock less than half the collection. They especially leave out all the good ones, battery or tree light powered.  Thank goodness I can rely on places on eBay like Ornaments4less, at least I’ll get what I want, and not what some silly manager at Target thinks will sell.

Rip Off from Oz

13 February 2006

There is nothing worse than watching a piece of theatre in a concert venue, especially an old one in Sydney that holds 12,000. Then it gets even worse when the promoter tells you that they expect you to pay up to $500 a ticket. It’s not even in the round. Pathetic is the word that comes to mind, normal seating is over $240.00, and for $100.00 you get to watch ants, well that’s what they’ll look like from where you’ll be sitting. I’ll wait for the free tv special and or the $19.99 DVD which the promoter probably sold the rights for another 10 million dollars. Peter Allen will be turning over in his grave.

Sydney 2000

7 February 2006

Of all the images the US NBC television network could have chosen from to promote the upcoming Winter Olympics, and they chose the Sydney 2000 Opening Ceremony.  I should be happy, but it makes me sad, because I remember they only bothered to air half of it at the time, and I was in the half they didn’t air.

Supanova

17 October 2005

Just had a very exciting weekend attending Supanova.  These kind of events used to be called Science Fiction Conventions, but in the PC times we live in, they are now called pop culture expos.  IMHO the organisers in the past wouldn’t know how to organise a piss up in a brewery, but this year, finally, they got it right.  They still need to realise that all seminars/guest talks need to be in thier own rooms, so no external noise can be heard.  Having other talks, general background noise and announcements over the PA while a guest is talking is bloody annoying to the attendees, and damn right rude to the guests.  The thing that amused me the most on the three days I attended was women fans dressed as anime characters, and one woman in particular who took Fan Service to a whole new level.  I enjoyed all the guest talks I attended, and even the ones I didn’t intend to.  I’ll try and sum them up in a few words: Richard Weta Taylor (Cool Kiwi), John Gimli Rhys-Davies (Generous, and a true gentleman), Richard Apollo Hatch (Intelligent), Gates Dr Crusher McFadden (Caring), Robin Saavik Curtis (Reminded me of my sister, and I do hope she gets to have her own child one day), Nicole Ezri Dax de Boer (Thoughtful teenager), Dominic Lt. Reed Keating (Rascal and a rogue), Matthew Neville Longbottom Lewis (Bright, with a great future ahead of him) and Dan Yu-Gi-Oh! Green (Fun, and who took rather a liking to the young woman sitting behind me who had successfully squeezed large breasts into a very tight pink top. Nice to know he is human).  May Supanova continue to improve.

Can you help?

2 September 2005

Much of the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Alabama in the US has been obliterated in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and floodwaters continue to rise in the overwhelmed city of New Orleans. Millions of people are suffering from the devastation and desperately need water, food, shelter and medical care today, as well as help coping with what promises to be a massive long-term recovery effort.

Please help the victims (both human and animal) of Hurricane Katrina as I have by donating money through the links below.

Super Trooper

16 June 2005

Just when you thought Hasbro couldn’t possibly release any more cool Star Wars toys, due for a US September release is Spud Trooper. I knew there was a reason I left some space next to Darth Tater.

Dalek Masterplan?

12 June 2005

At first I thought this was another BBC promotion for Dr Who, but it appears that the report is real. A group calling themselves “Guardians of the Planet Earth” have kidnapped a Dalek from Wookey Hole Caves near Wells in the United Kingdom and are demanding instructions from the Doctor.  Former Dr Who actor Colin Baker has been in touch with staff at the attraction, and may be asked to send a message to the kidnappers.

Wee Week

29 May 2005

A funny name, but a worthwhile venture. Today is the start of Wee Week, Kidney Health Australia is trying to get across the importance of having a regular kidney and urinary health check. Fair enough too, with 1 in 3 Aussies who are ‘at increased risk’ of kidney disease. Are you 1 in 3? Check Your Wee.

Amazingly Not Quite Right

13 May 2005

No spoilers here, but after watching the Season 7 finale of the Amazing Race my wife and I were left wondering was there some kind of internal interference by someone in the race participants transport to make it a close finish.  This interference, which is clearly visible in the episode, completely altered the outcome of the race. There is no way at all that any normal person would have been permitted to do what this team did.
